LIGHTING OF THE CHRIST CANDLE

CALL TO WORSHIP

This is the day

when Christ gathered with his disciples in an upper room.

This is the day

when Christ shared a meal as a sign of his great love.

This is the day

when Christ took washed the disciples’ feet, showing

us how to serve each other.

This is the day that the Lord has made.

HYMN  193   Out of my bondage sorrow and night

Out of my bondage, sorrow and night,
Jesus, I come; Jesus, I come;
into thy freedom, gladness and light,
Jesus, I come to thee;
out of my sickness into thy health,
out of my want and into thy wealth,
out of my sin and into thyself,
Jesus, I come to thee.2. Out of my shameful failure and loss,
Jesus, I come; Jesus, I come;
into the glorious gain of thy cross,
Jesus, I come to thee.
out of earth’s sorrows into thy balm,
out of life’s storms and into thy calm,
out of distress to jubilant psalm,
Jesus, I come to thee.3. Out of unrest and arrogant pride,
Jesus, I come; Jesus, I come;
into thy blessed will to abide,
Jesus, I come to thee;
out of myself to dwell in thy love,
out of despair into raptures above,
upward for aye on wings like a dove,
Jesus, I come to thee.

4. Out of the fear and dread of the tomb,
Jesus, I come; Jesus, I come;
into the joy and light of thy home,
Jesus, I come to thee;
out of the depths of ruin untold,
into the peace of thy sheltering fold,
ever thy glorious face to behold,
Jesus, I come to thee.

OPENING PRAYER

Holy and mysterious God,

we gather around this table to hear the story of the Last Supper again.

Focus our attention with ears that are prepared to hear, minds prepared to learn,

hands prepared to receive, and hearts prepared to love, even to the point of breaking.

Draw us closer to Christ to receive his loving kindness. Draw us closer to you and to one another for the sake of Jesus, our Lord and friend. Amen.

UNISON PRAYER OF CONFESSION

Holy God  as we gather together  we remember

there are  many ways  we fall short of your glory.

 Forgive us O God  Help us to learn to live

 together  according to your ways  through

Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior  AMEN

ASSURANCE OF PARDON

Our Lord Jesus Christ by the power of his divinity  bore the weight of God’s anger in his humanity restoring us to righteousness and life

On the night of his arrest, Jesus gave the disciples a new commandment: to love one another as he loved us. He set an example for them by washing their feet. In this act of service, he reminded them to care for one another.. Remember your baptism and Christ’s call to serve humbly as he has served us. We share the Passover story tonight in scripture  and after each reading, there will be a brief  silence  so that you may meditate  on what  each reading brings to your heart

HYMN       229  Jesu, Jesu  fill us with your love

Jesu, Jesu, fill us with your love,
show us how to serve the neighbors
we have from you.

Kneels at the feet of his friends,
silently washes their feet,
Master who acts as a slave to them.

Jesu, Jesu, fill us with your love,
show us how to serve the neighbors
we have from you.

Neighbors are rich and poor,
varied in colour and race,
neighbors are near and far away.

Jesu, Jesu, fill us with your love,
show us how to serve the neighbors
we have from you.

These are the ones we should serve,
these are the ones we should love;
all  are neighbors to us and you.

Jesu, Jesu, fill us with your love,
show us how to serve the neighbors
we have from you.

Kneel at the feet of our friends:

Silently washing their feet
this is the way we should live with you.

Jesu, Jesu, fill us with your love,
show us how to serve the neighbors
we have from you.

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE

God of love , you stooped to be our servant  and willingly suffered to give us life . For that love we give you thanks and praise for the ways in which your love is seen  in creation, in the nations ,in community, in our church, in our lives . We give thanks  for the events of this Holy Week and  the eternal command to love  each other  as you have loved us . In all or thoughts and actions  may we be your servants  , share the gospel story ,and reflect you love  We pray this in the name  of Jesus Christ  who lives and reigns with you and who taught us to pray together  saying

THE  LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father, who art in heaven hallowed be thy name,  thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread.  Forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

HYMN       560  Put peace into each others hand’s

Put peace into each other’s hand

and like a treasure hold it;

protect it like a candle flame,

with tenderness enfold it.

Put peace into each other’s hand

with loving expectation;

be gentle in your words and ways,

in touch with God’s creation.

Put peace into each other’s hand

like bread we break for sharing;

look people warmly in the eye:

Our life is meant for caring.

As at communion shape your hands

Into a waiting cradle.

The gift of Christ receive, revere

United round the table.

Put Christ into each other’s hands

he is love’s deepest measure;

in love make peace, give peace a chance

and share it like a treasure.

HOLY COMMUNION

We gather together around this table, spread for us to remember the love, care and sacrifice of Jesus Christ. Let us pray.

Holy and mysterious God, we gather to hear the story of the Last Supper again.

Focus our attention with ears that are prepared to hear, minds prepared to learn, hands prepared to receive, and hearts prepared to love, even to the point of breaking.

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might ,

Heaven and earth are full of your glory

Hosanna in the highest.

Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord .

Hosanna in the highest .

Creator of heaven and earth, you spoke and order emerged from chaos, creation from the formless void, and light from darkness. You formed us in your image and called us to be your people. You spoke words of truth and law and created us as a community. Through the prophets, you called us to live with justice and peace. In the fullness of time, your Word became flesh and lived among us.  Jesus, your Living Word, shared our human nature; he lived and died as one of us. He taught those who sought to follow his way. he healed the sick, ate and drank with outcasts, cured the blind, and proclaimed the good news of your kingdom. We give you thanks for Christ, and for the gifts of love and grace he shares with us.

Pour out your Spirit upon us and on these gifts of bread and wine, that they may become the body and blood of Christ, and that, nourished by them, we may become the body of Christ,

living and serving in the world.

On the night he was betrayed, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat; this is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me.”

After supper he took the cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying,

“Drink this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins; do this, as often as you drink of it, in remembrance of me.”

Prayer after Communion

Holy God, on this night Jesus gave his disciples a new commandment, to love one another as he loved them. Write this commandment on our hearts, we pray, and strengthen us in service, in unity and in love through Jesus Christ, our Lord and friend. Amen.

HYMN  230  Go to dark  Gethsemane

Go to dark Gethsemane ,

you who feel the tempters power

Your Redeemers conflict see

Watch with him one bitter hour

From his grief turn not away

Learn of Jesus Christ to pray

Follow to the judgement hall

See him beaten bound arrayed;

Patiently he bears it all

all our pain his soul sustained,

shun not suffering, pain or loss,

learn of Christ  to bear the cross .

Climb to Calvary’s mournful site;

There the  Lord of glory reigns;

There, through weakness wins the fight

Over sin our victory gains;

“It is finished “ hear  him cry;

There in Christ we dare to die.
